CHATGPT VS PERPLEXITY VS GOOGLE AI: WHY EACH RECOMMENDS DIFFERENT COMPANIES
ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews recommend different companies because each engine retrieves answers from different sources with different biases: only about 11% of citations overlap across platforms. ChatGPT leans on Wikipedia (26 to 48% of its top citations) and names brands in only about 0.59% of responses. Perplexity is search-native and Reddit-heavy, citing brands in roughly 13% of responses, a 46x gap over ChatGPT. Google AI Overviews stopped mirroring organic rankings (the correlation with the organic top 10 collapsed from roughly 94% to 17-38%) and now runs query fan-out: it splits one question into sub-queries and cites pages that appear across them. The few places all engines agree: Reddit is the most-cited domain overall at about 40% frequency, LinkedIn is #2, and YouTube is the single most-cited domain by share. If your visibility differs by engine, that variance is the diagnosis, not noise.
WHY IS CITATION OVERLAP ONLY 11%?
Each engine has its own retrieval stack: a different search index, different source-quality filters, and a different model deciding what to extract. ChatGPT's browsing runs on Bing's index plus OpenAI's source preferences. Perplexity built its own search-native pipeline. Google AI Overviews draws on Google's index but selects differently than its own organic algorithm. Claude uses Brave Search with conservative source filters. Four indexes, four selection policies, four different answers. This is why "we rank #1 on Google" tells you almost nothing about whether ChatGPT recommends you, and why measuring Share of Model per engine is the only honest way to track AI visibility.
HOW CHATGPT PICKS ITS CITATIONS
ChatGPT is the brand-shy engine. It cites brands in only about 0.59% of responses, and 26 to 48% of its top citations point at Wikipedia. It prefers consensus reference sources over commercial pages, which means two practical things. First, your Wikipedia and Wikidata presence (and the accuracy of what those say about you) matters more on ChatGPT than anything on your own site. Second, set expectations accordingly: when optimization work starts producing results, ChatGPT is usually the LAST engine to show movement. If an agency promises fast ChatGPT brand mentions, ask them for the base rate.
HOW PERPLEXITY PICKS ITS CITATIONS
Perplexity is the opposite: search-native, Reddit-heavy, and the most brand-friendly major engine at roughly 13% brand citation rate. Citation is the entire product philosophy. As founder Aravind Srinivas describes it:
"Every answer in Perplexity comes with sources from the web."
Because Perplexity retrieves live and cites generously, it is the first place optimization shows up, often within weeks. HOW GOOGLE AI OVERVIEWS PICKS ITS CITATIONS
The biggest mechanical change of the past year. In 2025, pages cited in AI Overviews came from the organic top 10 roughly 94% of the time; by early 2026 that correlation collapsed to 17-38%. The mechanism now is query fan-out: Google splits your question into multiple sub-queries, retrieves for each, and cites pages that appear across several of them. One page optimized for one head term loses to a topic cluster that covers the related questions. The May 2026 update doubled down: inline citations attached to specific claims, hover previews, and an "Expert Advice" block that surfaces named practitioners. The click economics are brutal and asymmetric: pages cited in an AI Overview earn about 35% more organic clicks, while non-cited pages lose roughly 61% of expected CTR when an Overview triggers. Sundar Pichai has called AI Overviews "one of the most successful launches in Search in the past decade," and Google is expanding them to more query types every month. Being in the answer or out of it is now most of the game on Google.
WHERE ALL THE ENGINES AGREE
Three source patterns hold across every major engine in 2026:
- Reddit is the #1 cited domain across all major engines, at roughly 40% citation frequency. Not just on Perplexity anymore.
- LinkedIn is #2 overall and #1 for professional queries. Its citation frequency doubled between November 2025 and February 2026.
- YouTube is the single most-cited domain by share. Video transcripts are extractable answers, and engines treat them that way.
The common thread: engines trust surfaces where third parties talk about you more than they trust your website talking about itself. That is also why ranking-format listicle pages capture roughly 74% of AI citations. Off-site consensus is mandatory, not optional. Building it is a core job of a GEO agency.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOUR STRATEGY
- Stop optimizing for "AI" as one channel. A 30% Share of Model on Claude with 5% on Perplexity is a different problem than the inverse, with a different fix.
- Sequence your expectations: Perplexity moves first, Google surfaces second, ChatGPT last. Report progress in that order.
- Build topic clusters for Google fan-out: cover the sub-questions around your head terms in self-contained, extractable blocks.
